We had the pleasure to interview South African artist Penelope Hunter, whose favorite subject matters include humans, animals and landscapes with an organic feel, often with impasto and elements of abstraction in bright colors:

1. How did you become an artist?

Drawing and painting has been my favourite thing to do, since I was very little. My late father was an artist, and always shared his guidance.

2. What inspires your art? Where and how do you find inspiration?

I'm always looking at colour and design in nature and in everyday life. Wildlife, landscapes and people are my biggest inspirations. I love being outdoors.

3. What does your art mean to you?

Art, for me, brings a different perspective to everyday life- the mind of the artist can create different ways of seeing things. Art is like a window into other's perceptions.

4. What is the most valuable piece of art to you?

My fathers final oil painting , before he passed away, of a Cape Vulture in flight.

5. How do you overcome your creative blocks?

I spend time gardening to take a break from the art studio. I like to experiment with different mediums and try sketching subjects that I haven't tried before.

6. Would you describe the experience or feelings you have when creating your art?

Painting can be a form of meditation for me-in that it can still the mind. I feel a sense of appreciation for the person, place or animal I'm painting. It is a balance of sometimes carefully planning and also allowing for spontaneous changes to happen..
