As the top creator of Paint by Number and Diamond Art Kits, we here at Craft-Ease take our commitment to your satisfaction very seriously. And to help you make the most of this celebrated form of art, we’ve put together a quick guide to everything that you need to know to make stunning paint by number art. So grab your paint by numbers brush and let’s get started!
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Each of our highly rated Paint by Number Kits comes with everything you’ll need, including ready-to-use acrylic paints, four wooden paint brushes, your canvas, and a picture of the original design to help guide you as you paint.
In addition, gather a cup of fresh water and a towel to clean off your brushes as you switch between colors, as well as some craft paper or newspaper to line the surface underneath. Lay out all of your supplies on a flat surface, tie up your paint apron strings, and you’re good to go.
Step 2: Get to Work
If you’re working on a full canvas kit without a frame, tape each corner of your canvas down so that it will stay steady as you paint.
Looking at your canvas, you’ll see areas marked with numbers 1 through 24, with each number corresponding to a numbered paint pot. To create your artwork, simply fill in each area with the color that matches its designated number.
We recommend that you go one number (and one color) at a time, instead of section-by-section. This will help ensure that your paints don’t dry out in between use. Work either from top to bottom, left to right, or right to left, depending on what’s most comfortable for you. And as a good rule of thumb, complete the lighter colors first, since you’ll be able to cover any mistakes with darker colors later on.
A note on paint by numbers blending: If you’d like to blend your paints for a more natural edge, use a dry brush and gently feather out the wet paint of each section as you finish.
How to Make Paint by Numbers Look Better
Here are some of our top tips for making sure that your painting comes out looking its best:
- Go slow so that you don’t accidentally make any mistakes during the painting process, such as using the wrong color in the wrong area.
- Apply more than one layer of paint as needed to more heavily saturated areas and give a more uniform look.
- To prevent the number from showing through the paint, cover it up with a white pencil first.

To get start painting your own masterpieces, follow the steps below:
1. If you are to work on your full kit canvas without any frame, we recommend that you tape each corner of the canvas so it wouldn’t move during painting. Start by matching the numbered paint pot following the color guide, you may need to label with the 1-24 stickers if each paint pot comes in their own color code.
2. Your canvas is filled with areas marked with numbers from 1 to 24 and so are your paint pots. Fill each area with paint marked with the matching number to complete your paint by numbers.
3. To start, pick an area of lighter color, from top to down, left to right if you are right-handed or right to left if left-handed. The darker color can cover any mistake of lighter color and the lighter color is easier to wash off when switching colors.
4. Stick with one color at a time. This is important in order to prevent the paints from drying because acrylic paints are quick to dry. This is also to avoid the hassle of cleaning the paintbrush every time when switching paint color.
5. When you finish with one color, remember to clean your paintbrush with water and a paper towel before loading another paint color.
6. How your painting turns out is solely dependent on how you paint it. You can apply various techniques to achieve the painting of your desired style. It is up to you if you want to replicate the original image as much as you can or to create the painting in a style that you want. Check out the paintbrush guide to get inspirations.

What is paint by numbers?
Paint by numbers refers to guided painting by filling the numbered areas on a pre-outlined canvas with the corresponding numbered colors of paints.
This guided way of painting presents the outlines of the design while offering room for creativity. It is up to the painters to apply choices of colors and various paintbrush techniques (gradient, walking colors etc.) to personalize the art in their own style.
Painting is considered an effective form of art therapy which is why Craft-Ease™ Paint by Numbers kits are popular among customers seeking these therapeutic effects.
Where do your designs come from?
The Exclusive series of designs are authorized by their art creators to exclusively feature on our website. These kits of unique beautiful designs can be found legitimately only on Craft-Ease. Besides providing art therapy craft kits, Craft-Ease™ also strives to actively support the artists by remunerating them for their works.
Another series of paint by numbers, “The Classics”, presents a collection of the famous masterpieces by the most renowned artists in history. People can now enjoy restoring the legendary art from their home.
Can I order a Paint by Number kits using my own image or photograph?
Yes! Craft-Ease™ offers Custom Paint by Numbers Kit using your own image. There are many sizes to choose from too - the larger the size, the more details and realistic the painting will turn out. A few tips about the image you provide:
- Please provide a high-resolution image with a clear contrast
- Please provide a photo with the exact ratio as your chosen option of sizes, or your canvas will come distorted with a different scale
- Portraits or images of a focus point look particularly great
- Details will not appear like a photograph; rather they would be blurred out
- Colors can vary between the photograph and the provided paint colors
What are the available canvas sizes?
In order to respect the original art created by our artists, Craft-Ease™ Paint by Numbers are available in 30 cm x 50 cm, 40 cm x 40 cm, and 40 cm x 50 cm (horizontal and vertical depending on the image). More sizes are available on the custom paintings to fit customers’ needs.
How many paint colors are included in each kit?
Each kit includes a maximum of 24 paint pots depending on the image. The paints we supply should be sufficient to achieve the completion of the entire painting.
Will I need to apply multiple layers to cover the numbers?
The numbers on the canvas should be covered after applying a single coat; it is also possible that it’d require 2 to 3 coats of paints for the darker shades.
How long does it take for the paints to dry up?
Acrylic paint is easy to work with because it dries relatively fast.
On the canvas, acrylic paints dry quickly within 10 – 15 minutes depending on the thickness of the paint and the environmental conditions (air flow, temperature etc).
It is important to avoid the paint in the paint pot from drying up with the following tips:
- Close the lid of the paint pot when not in use
- Put the paint pots away from sunlight and heat
Do I need to mix paint colors?
The paint colors we supply have already been adjusted to best fit the design. There is no need to mix colors of your own unless you wish to do so to create your choices of color.
Why does my paint by numbers look different from the website's image?
The images displayed on our website are of digital resolution and colors. Painting isn’t like photography which offers precision and clarity on details. The discrepancies can be due to the definition, screen resolution, color perception and the limitation of 24 paint colors.
What to do with the creases of my canvas?
Creases can often appear. Fret not, Craft-Ease™ paint by numbers canvas uses high quality linen canvas with premium print; there are a few quick fixes to remove these creases effectively:
Creases on unpainted canvas
- With Craft-Ease™ high-quality linen canvas, any standing clothing steamer or flat iron’s steaming function to steam from the back of the canvas can easily get rid of any pronounced creases.
For canvas made of synthetic or mass materials, high heat of flat iron is recommended to remove the crease without any water.
Creases on already painted canvas
- The easier and the best way to make the crease disappear is to stretch the painted canvas by framing it prior to priming the painting – consider having it framed easily and quickly with the original wooden frame kit. Alternatively, you may paint a pre-framed painting to avoid creating any crease (check out all Full Kit+Frame options of Craft-Ease™). Your masterpiece will look fabulous framed on the wall anyway!
Can I frame my canvas before or after painting?
Absolutely, and it’s really easy too! Check out original wooden frame kit and the guide to frame your own painting.
What are these extra white semi-translucent pots?
A bonus accessory of Craft-Ease, these are Brighteners, served as the final coating after the painting is finished to make the painting shinier, prettier with additional protection too.
What is this “white spiky” accessory?
Another bonus accessories: this is a wall hook that can be used to hang your framed painting on the wall! Identify the location to fix your wall hook - simply nail down the metal “spikes” across the white part to fix it.
